The Patrol Division includes the Patrol Unit, COPPS Unit, and Tactical Unit.

The Patrol Unit and K9 Unit are responsible for responding to calls for service received through the Communications Unit.

The Patrol Unit is staffed by officers assigned to deliver traditional immediate police emergency response, as well as to initiate more involved criminal investigations. North Kansas City patrol officers are the backbone of visible policing in our community. These are the men and women that are on constant vigil to provide emergency services around the clock, every single day of the year.

COPPS Unit

The North Kansas City Police Department is also committed to the national concept of Community Policing, often abbreviated as COPPS, which stands for Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving. Our COPPS Unit is highly focused on the problem-solving aspect of community policing. The two officers assigned to the unit have received many hours of specialized training designed to enhance the problem-solving aspect of the police department.

The COPPS Unit (Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving) provides a critical link for our crime prevention programs for the public and our business community, such as Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) and the Safe Residence Program.

SRO

The School Resource Officer, SRO, is a sworn police officer who is assigned to North Kansas City High School. Their primary role is to promote a safe and secure learning environment for students, teachers, and staff. They help prevent and respond to incidents of violence, drugs, or other criminal activities on school grounds. SROs build positive relationships with students, teachers, and staff. They aim to create a sense of trust and approachability, making it easier for students to report concerns or issues. The SRO serves as a mentor and counselor for students. They provide guidance, support, and advice to students facing personal or behavioral challenges. The SRO participates in educational programs related to topics such as drug awareness, cyberbullying, and safety. They often engage in classroom discussions or assemblies on these subjects. The SRO helps mediate conflicts and disputes among students and can play a role in conflict resolution and restorative justice practices. They are also trained to respond to emergency situations, such as lockdowns, and work closely with school staff to ensure a coordinated response in case of a crisis. 

 Tactical Unit

The Tactical Team consists of specially trained officers and negotiators from all units within the police department, as well as medics from the North Kansas City Fire Department. The Tactical Team responds to a variety of incidents that include, but are not limited to the following:

• Hostage Situations
• Barricaded Subjects
• High-Risk Warrant Service
• High-Risk Rescue
• Special Circumstances as directed by the Chief of Police
