North Kansas City’s Streetscape Beautification Grant Program was developed to encourage and support local businesses in their efforts to beautify and improve the ‘curb appeal’ of their facility. Participation in the program also helps foster a stronger partnership between the City and local businesses. Over 75 businesses have participated in the Program since it’s inception in 2006, and their projects have made North Kansas City an even more beautiful place to live, work, and play.

Eligible Projects

City matching funds are limited to projects located partially or fully upon street or highway right-of-ways. Eligible projects include, but are not limited to the following:

• Raised planters for flower beds, shrubbery, and other plantings

• Ornamental tree and shrub plantings

• Irrigation system for landscape improvements

• Pedestrian walkway improvements

• Large-scale street-side cleanup projects

• Professional landscape planning and design work

• Other beautification projects in public spaces

Emphasis will be given to projects that address stormwater runoff control. These types of projects could be rain gardens, bio-swales, native plantings, etc. More information on stormwater control projects can be found at www.marc.org/Environment/Water-Resources

Maintenance of Improvements

Successful applicants will be responsible for the perpetual maintenance of any streetscape improvements funded through the program. Sustainable projects are one of the criteria in the selection process.

Funding

Matching grants (50 percent) range from $50 to $5,000 to be paid on a reimbursable basis to qualifying projects received by the deadline. If the total amount of qualified submittals exceeds the amount budgeted for the grant program, the City may reject certain submittals or reduce the percentage of matching funds awarded. Applicants may request the maximum grant of $5,000 for projects exceeding $10,000. There is a total of $16,000 in funding each grant year.

The City of North Kansas City may be able to assist you as you plan for your project. Whether it is providing information regarding the extension of water lines for irrigation purposes, locating the right-of-way line, or suggesting types of plants that may grow well in our area, our Public Works staff is available for technical assistance to help you implement your beautification project.

Grantee Responsibilities

• Provide perpetual maintenance of the streetscape improvements.

• Complete the project and submit a request for reimbursement with copy of all receipts of payments – must be received by the posted deadline.

• Provide before and after photos documenting the project.
