Friday Greetings,

• On Monday, August 28, Mayor DeLong, Police Chief Kevin Freeman, Police Officers Filger and Ojeda, City Administrator Mike Nichols, and Deputy City Administrator Kim Nakahodo attended a ceremonial bill signing of SB 127, which included the designation of “Officer Daniel Vasquez Memorial Highway” along Highway 210 in North Kansas City.  Thank you to Senator Lauren Arthur and Representative Eric Woods for securing this designation and Governor Mike Parson for supporting this bill.  Photo attached.

• On Thursday, August 31, the Endless Game Foundation began its attempt to smash an official Guinness World Record for the longest marathon baseball game at Macken Park!  Come cheer on Team Strength and Team Courage, who are playing to benefit local non-profits.  Activities are planned throughout the event, which will conclude on September 4.  For more information, visit www.endlessgame.org.  Photos attached.

• Registration is open for the Fall/Winter NKC Citizens Academy.  The NKC Citizens Academy is a 9-week program available to residents and is an excellent opportunity to learn more about your City.  Sign up today by visiting www.nkc.org/academy or contacting Deputy City Clerk Mallory Brown at mbrown@nkc.com.  Class minimum attendance is 10 participants.  Should the Fall/Winter class not be filled, the course will be postponed until next Spring/Summer.

• The Special Road District is conducting resurfacing projects within the City of North Kansas City.  Traffic control and detours will be set up in the area, along with intermittent closures on the road.  All projects are weather-pending.

o Swift Street between 14th and 16th Avenues will be closed intermittently on September 16th for repaving.
o Lynn Street between Armour Road and 16th Avenue will be closed intermittently on September 9th for repaving.

• MoDOT has multiple road closures impacting traffic throughout NKC over the next few months.

o Crews will be conducting overnight mill and overlay operations on Highway 210 from I-435 west to Ozark Street.  Work will feature lane closures throughout the project. Crews are currently between Hwy 291 and I-435, working their way west towards NKC.

o I‐35 Ramp Closures – Bridge Expansion Joints.  Construction work on Interstate 35 to repair failing expansion joints will occur through September 2023.  Ramps from 16th Avenue onto southbound I‐35 remain closed. 

• North Kansas City Parks & Recreation is hosting Briar Fest at Macken Park on September 8 and 9!  This is the eighth year of this Music Festival and its first time in North Kansas City.  Visit www.briarfestkc.com for more details.

• The Citywide Garage Sale will be Saturday, September 16.  We encourage you to take advantage of this event to clean out your homes and maybe even make a little money in the process.  The Citywide Garage sale does not require a permit to participate.  In case of inclement weather, this event will be held the following Saturday, September 23.
