The health and safety of our community is our highest priority.  The Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to spread throughout the country.  At this time, there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Clay County.  Staff is working with public health officials and emergency management professionals to monitor and adjust operations for the global COVID-19 or coronavirus outbreak.

In an effort to continue to protect our residents, visitors, and employees, and reduce the spread of the COVID-19, the City of North Kansas City announces the following changes in services, closures, and cancellations.  For the latest information about the City’s efforts, please visit www.nkc.org/coronavirus.

City Facilities – City Hall, Municipal Court, Police Headquarters, Fire Stations 1 & 2, and the Parks & Recreation Center are closed to the public effective Monday, March 16 at 5 p.m.  At this time, City facilities will continue to be staffed on a limited basis to continue normal operations as much as possible.  Customers are encouraged to conduct business with the City through City’s website, phone or email.  Contact information is listed below:

Public Meetings

  • The City Council will host a Special Meeting on Tuesday, March 17 at 5:30 p.m. to consider an ordinance authorizing emergency procedures.  This will be the only item considered at this Special Meeting.  This Special Meeting will not be broadcast via the City’s YouTube Channel and cable channel, as the City Council will be practicing social distancing and will not be speaking into microphones.  This session will be open to the public, although attendance will be limited to comply with the Clay County Health Center’s current recommendations.
  • The City Council Work Session for Tuesday, March 17 has been postponed.
  • Should the City Council adopt the proposed emergency procedures ordinance at the Special Meeting on Tuesday, March 17 at 5:30 p.m., the City Hall lobby will be closed to the public for a reduced City Council Agenda.  This meeting will be broadcast via the City’s YouTube Channel and Channel 2 (Spectrum).  While the public will be able to listen to the proceedings, there will not be any opportunity for public comment.  Most of the items originally scheduled for this agenda have been postponed.
  • The April 2 Planning Commission has been postponed.

Water Utility Bills & Service – Customers may continue to make payments through the drop box located at City Hall, by mail or online.  Customers are encouraged to pay their utility bills via the City’s online payment portal at https://www.municipalonlinepayments.com/northkansascitymo/utilities.  The City has suspended any water utility shutoffs until further notice.

Building Permits/Code Enforcement/Fire Inspections and Plan Review - Plan review, construction inspections and certificate of occupancy final inspections can be scheduled by calling 816-274-6006.  Customers can continue to drop off plans for review by utilizing the Police Department lobby located at 2020 Howell Street.  Please call the Police non-emergency dispatch number at 816-274-6013 to gain access to the dropbox for oversized packages in the Police Department lobby.

Police Department - The police department has implemented operational adjustments including restricted access, and encouraging citizens to report certain types of incidents over the phone instead of utilizing critical emergency resources to respond to their location.  Animal Control will continue operations, but the facility will only be accessible by appointment only.  When requesting police services, please continue to call 9-1-1 for emergencies and 816-274-6013 for non-emergencies and past occurred incidents.

Fire Department - The fire department has implemented operational adjustments including the suspension of non-essential activities including public outreach and fire station tours.   When requesting fire or EMS services, please continue to call 9-1-1 for emergencies and 816-274-6025 for non-emergencies.

North Kansas City Municipal Court – The court has postponed/continued the Monday, March 23 and April 6 Municipal Court dockets to a later date.  All prisoner arraignments will continue as usual via video conferencing.   The Court staff will be working with the Municipal Court Judge to set cases appropriately and notify all attorneys and defendants of the new dates as soon as possible.  Municipal Court customers can pay their court payments by mail, the drop box located at City Hall or online at https://www.municipalonlinepayments.com/northkansascitymo/court/search.

North Kansas City Parks & Recreation -  The North Kansas City Parks & Recreation Center will be closed until Monday, May 4.  Waggin’ Trail Dog Park will be closed to the public until further notice.  All classes and programs have been canceled until further notice.  All rental parties and sports events have been canceled until Monday, May 4.  Staff will be contacting program and rental customers concerning refund information.  Macken Park and Dagg Park are open to the public, but the restrooms will not be open to the public until Monday, May 4.  Parks & Recreation staff will be monitoring information provided by the Clay County Public Health Center and may cancel future events, programs, and reservations.  If you have any questions or concerns about Parks & Recreation, please email parks_rec@nkc.org.

North Kansas City Library – The North Kansas City Public Library is closed until further notice. This includes all classes, activities, meeting and study room usages, and outreach services.  Customers are welcome to visit the Library’s collection of digital books, music, and magazines, available here at nkcpl.org, and via your Overdrive and/or Libby app(s).

liNKCity Customers – KC Fiber/liNKCity is temporarily removing the capacity limits for liNKCity customers. This will enable those liNKCity customers to utilize increased internet capacity to be more effective in whatever work-related tasks they need to do.

Please be aware that our goal is to continue to provide as many services as possible, but our resources may be stressed as employees take leaves of absence or choose to telecommute, if their position allows.  As such, please note that our response times for certain service requests may be delayed.

If you are feeling sick and have reason to believe you have been exposed to COVID-19, please call your health care provider for instructions. Do not go to the emergency room or the health department for testing.  The Clay County Health Center is providing up-to-date information on their website at https://www.clayhealth.com/279/COVID-19-2019-Novel-Coronavirus.
