Trash and Recycling Services

Solid Waste Services for Residents
North Kansas City provides trash collection to all non-commercial properties through Jim's Disposal. Please contact Public Works at 816-274-6004 to setup service and to receive your wheeled trash container. If you have any complaints, issues or need to report a missed pickup, please contact Public Works.

Trash Collection Services – Tuesdays & Fridays
Residents will be provided a 65-gallon wheeled container, tan in color, with a black lid. Trash needs to be curbside/alleyway by 7am on collection days and container must be removed the evening of pickup.

Curbside Recycling - Tuesdays
Residents will be provided a 65-gallon wheeled container, tan in color, with a blue or green lid. Recycling will need to be curbside/alleyway by 7am on collection day and container must be removed the evening of pickup.
In an effort to reduce contamination, please follow these four rules:
1. Only place empty #1 and #2 plastic bottles (without caps), metal cans, paper and flattened cardboard in your recycling cart.
2. Keep food and liquids out of the recycling bin.
3. Empty recyclables directly into your cart - NO bagged recyclables.
4. If in doubt, leave it out.
*Glass bottles, jars, and containers are not accepted, but can be taken to the Ripple Glass recycling drop-off site located at the southwest corner of the YMCA parking lot.

Container Options & Storage
Smaller container options are available by calling the Public Works Department at 816-274-6004. Trash and recycling containers are required to be stored inside, or on your side or rear yard next to your house. Storing trash and recycling containers in your front yard is a Municipal Code violation and violators are subject to being fined. Empty containers should be removed from curbside/alleyway and stored the evening of pickup.

Yard Waste – Wednesdays March - December
Yard waste, such as leaves and grass clippings, must be placed in biodegradable paper bags. Small tree branches and limbs are accepted, but must be bundled with rope or twine, not to exceed a 3” diameter or 4’ length. Bags are available at City Hall for a discounted price of 10 bags for $2.00. Yard waste is collected and composted, so plastic bags and other non-compostable materials are not accepted. Containers, other than biodegradable paper bags for yard waste, are not allowed and will not be hauled away by the trash hauler.

Bulky Waste – 1st Wednesday of the Month
Bulky waste, which includes items such as kitchen appliances, furniture, mattresses, and other large items. Please note that it is required for all 'refrigerated appliances' to have the refrigerant removed before it will be accepted for pickup. In such cases, the owner will need a professional (such as an appliance repair shop), to remove the refrigerant prior to disposal. Tires, substantial amounts of debris, major remodeling or clean-up projects, including re-roofing and sheet rock replacement are not accepted. For residents requiring a pickup of more items, call Jim's Disposal at 816-221-1932 to arrange it for a fee of $25.

Roll Off Containers
If you have a large disposal project, you may call Jim's Disposal at 816-221-1932 to order a 10-yard ($150) or 20-yard ($250) container. Please call Pubic Works for placement guidelines at 816-274-6004.

Holiday Service
Jim's Disposal will not service on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day. If Christmas falls on Tuesday or Friday, service will occur on the following day.

Household Hazardous Waste - Deramus (816-513-8400) FREE for NKC Residents
Household hazardous waste includes household cleaners, lawn and garden products, automobile fluids, insecticides, paints and paint-related products, and other common products. Household hazardous waste containers usually have words such as DANGER, WARNING, or CAUTION on their labels. These hazardous products are not allowed in landfills because they are corrosive, explosive, reactive, flammable, or toxic, and may leach into underground water channels and pollute streams and rivers. To properly dispose of HHW, residents may drop off products at no charge at 4707 Deramus (just south of the Chouteau Bridge). The hours of operation are: Thursdays and Fridays, 9am–6pm, and Saturdays, 9am–4pm.

Recycling Center Closes
The drop off recycling center was closed after months of escalating volumes of garbage, furniture, and trash were dumped in the roll-off recycling containers. Due to the fact that there was so much garbage, furniture, and non-recyclable items in the containers, the trash haulers had to start hauling the containers to a landfill. Residents of NKC can take their recycling to KCMO’s Eco Center, located on Deramus Street, just south of the Chouteau Bridge. We are working with Mid America Regional Council, along with several other cities, to try to develop more regional recycling drop off sites throughout the metro area. They must have certain hours, be protected by a large fence, and have volunteers to assist residents during certain hours of operation, otherwise they too will become dumping grounds. But for now, we recommend taking your recycling items to the Deramus site.
