COVID-19 Information and Resources (3/17/20)

The health and safety of our community is our highest priority.  The Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to spread throughout the country.  At this time, there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Clay County.  Staff is working with public health officials and emergency management professionals to monitor and adjust operations for the global COVID-19 or coronavirus outbreak.

With this in mind, please be advised of the following changes to tonight’s City Council Meetings:

  • Tonight’s Special Meeting at 5:30 p.m. has been canceled. The ordinance that was on that agenda has been moved to the Regular Meeting Agenda at 7 p.m.
  • An amended Regular Meeting Agenda has been posted on www.nkc.org.
  • The Work Session at 6 p.m. has been canceled.
  • The City Council Meeting at 7 p.m. will be in-person.This session will be open to the public, although attendance will be limited to comply with the Clay County Health Center’s current recommendations.Due to the use of social distancing strategies, the meeting will not be broadcast as the City Council will not be utilizing the dais or microphones. The City will send out its regular meeting recap on Wednesday, March 18.
  • The City Council will be considering an Ordinance Authorizing Emergency Procedures.Among other policies and procedures, this Ordinance would allow the City to suspend the operation of all dine-in restaurant services effective immediately in North Kansas City.

The Clay County Health Department issued revised recommendations at noon today.  City officials request that private establishments voluntarily comply with these recommendations.

These recommendations include:

  • No public gatherings of 10 or more people. Exceptions include governmental and judicial functions, healthcare facilities, private business operations, religious and faith-based activities, weddings and funerals. Gatherings/organizations that choose to continue should follow recommendations from the CDC on preventing the spread of disease.
  • Restaurants, bars, taverns, movie theaters and clubs should only serve customers via drive-thru, pickup or delivery.
  • No visits to nursing homes, retirement homes or long-term care facilities.

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson stated that all casinos in the state will close this evening at midnight until March 30.   “I have consulted with the chairman of the Gaming Commission, and Missouri casinos will be closed at midnight tonight through March 30 in order to help prevent the spread of COVID-19,” Parson said.

Please be aware that our goal is to continue to provide as many services as possible, but our resources may be stressed as employees take leaves of absence or choose to telecommute, if their position allows.  As such, please note that our response times for certain service requests may be delayed.

If you are feeling sick and have reason to believe you have been exposed to COVID-19, please call your health care provider for instructions. Do not go to the emergency room or the health department for testing.  The Clay County Health Center is providing up-to-date information on their website at https://www.clayhealth.com/279/COVID-19-2019-Novel-Coronavirus.
