Week in Review 3/23/18

Friday Greetings,

We would like to welcome our new Water Services Maintenance Worker Kyle Elam – welcome aboard!  Kyle’s first day will be Monday, March 26.

The 2017 CAFR Report is now available on the City’s website.  You can view the report by following this link: https://goo.gl/oqYG8H

66 people attended the City’s 39th annual Boards Appreciation Banquet at Black on Burlington on Thursday.  Members of the City’s volunteer boards and commissions were recognized and thanked for the service that they provide to make our community a better place.

The City participated in the Clay County EDC “State of the Cities” luncheon on Friday at Harrah’s.  City Administrator Eric Berlin updated the attendees on development progress in the City in the last year and upcoming development activities.  Other cities providing updates on their progress included Excelsior Springs, Gladstone, Kansas City, Kearney, Lawson, Liberty, Pleasant Valley and Smithville.

At its meeting on February 20, 2018, the City Council authorized the City's proposal to the Missouri Department of Economic Development that the NKC be designated as a federal "Opportunity Zone." Opportunity Zones were created in the recent enacted federal tax reform legislation. In communities designated as Opportunity Zones, certain eligible investments made by U.S. investors may gain favorable tax treatment and tax incentives, which can aid development. The City learned this week that its proposal is one of those forwarded to Governor Greitens with a recommendation that he nominate it for Opportunity Zone status.

On Thursday, iWerx hosted the North Kansas City Beyond The Loop Open House.  This session was well attended and participants previewed potential options to cross the river, connect our communities, and accommodate our future needs. If you missed the Open House, there is still an opportunity to learn about the project and share your input through an online survey.  The meeting materials and survey are on the project’s website at http://www.beyondtheloopkc.com/#about.

Community Development has launched a webpage providing information on the proposed update to 2018 ICC building and construction codes, including information about the differences between the 2012 and 2018 versions. Community Development is taking written comments on the 2018 code before scheduling a public hearing. The new webpage is available at https://goo.gl/Za5x61

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission recently issued a recall on Kidde Dual Sensor Smoke Alarms due to risk of failure.  None of the smoke alarms installed by the North Kansas City Fire Department were involved in this recall.
