Friday Greetings,

Two weeks ago, as Municipal Services crews were preparing to spray herbicide on the Burlington medians, they noticed that a different type of weed had emerged on every median from 10th Avenue to 28th Avenue. Later, the weed was identified as kylinga, a weed that produces “stick-tights”.  The weed has now grown around and through the juniper bushes and in most areas the junipers cannot be seen.  Public Works staff researched this plant and spoke with an expert to determine a type of herbicide that is effective in killing kylinga.  Unfortunately, all herbicides used for eradicating this invasive weed may also kill the junipers.  Municipal Services has scheduled to spray the first application of an herbicide called ‘Dismiss’ next week and staff hope the junipers will survive.

Chief Water Treatment Plant Operator Danny Matthys hosted a tour of the Water Treatment Plant for City Council members yesterday evening.  Those who attended learned about the City’s pumping, treatment, and distribution process.  Staff also highlighted the areas where renovations are to be made as part of the Water Plant and Well Rehabilitation Project, which is anticipated to begin this fall.  For more information about our water treatment process, click on this video link: https://youtu.be/h7j8LpTHlRs.
