Friday Greetings,

On Saturday, May 5, the City hosted their annual Pet Vaccination event.  This event allows residents to receive free pet rabies shots and receive their annual pet license. The veterinarian vaccinated 73 animals and City staff issued 74 pet licenses.

On Tuesday, May 8, the North Kansas City Fire Department, Gladstone Fire Department and Kansas City Missouri Fire Department responded to a large structure fire at 1900 Swift.  Thankfully there were no injuries as a result of this structure fire. North Kansas City Fire Department crews worked overnight addressing hotspots inside the structure. On Wednesday, May 9, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the North Kansas City Fire Department announced the preliminary fire investigation results – Failure to Properly Extinguish Smoking Material. The City has issued a Notice of Dangerous Structure Order to Abate Nuisance for the building.  As a result, the property owner has secured the property and added exterior support beams to the building for additional support of the unsecured walls.  Demolition of the structure was ordered as part of the Notice of Dangerous Structure Order to Abate Nuisance.  The demolition company is currently working to secure proper demolition permits. The property owner is working with the 13 businesses impacted by this structure fire to relocate them into office space within their network.

The City received tremendous support from the Gladstone Fire Department, Kansas City Missouri Fire Department, Scott Lamaster’s Taking it to the Streets group, the ATF and numerous local businesses. The City expresses its gratitude to the members of the departments of Fire, Police, Public Works, Community Development, Administration and others who have been involved with the team response to this fire.

MoDot Crews will close the southbound lanes of Route 169 across the Buck O’Neil (Broadway) Bridge on Saturday, May 19.  Southbound traffic will be detoured onto I-35 and Route 9 until November.  Due to this closure KCTA will divert three bus routes from Broadway to Route 9 (Burlington).  In order to maintain the schedules, KCATA will implement a Transit Queue Jump on Southbound Route 9 (Burlington) from 26th Avenue to 12th Avenue.  Through this area, the right shoulder will be converted into a ‘Buses Only’ lane and parking will not be permitted during week days from 6-9 a.m.
