Friday Greetings,

Community Development issued a permit for the construction of the new hotel/conference center in One North and held a pre-construction meeting with the contractor on Monday. The Industrial Development Bonds for the project closed on January 24th.  The contractor is currently mobilizing on the site to begin construction.

Community Development Director Sara Copeland attended the Missouri Chapter of the American Planning Association board retreat in Jefferson City on Thursday, January 31. Sara is beginning a second term as the Missouri Chapter’s treasurer.

Staff added a new community profile tool on the City’s Economic Development webpage this week: http://www.nkc.org/departments/economic_development.   This new data portal shows demographic, employer and workforce data graphically and is updated on a regular basis.  This new resource was provided to the City free of charge as part of our membership with the Kansas City Area Development Council.

The City annually offers commercial properties in North Kansas City a grant to beautify and improve the ‘curb appeal’ of their facilities.  Participation in the program helps foster a stronger partnership between the City and local businesses.  Applications may be obtained by going to the City’s website, www.nkc.org (see the News section on the Homepage or the Business tab at the top) or by contacting Victoria in the Public Works Office at 816-274-6004 or emailing vlressler@nkc.org. Application deadline is Friday, March 8, 2019.

The Water and Sewer bills that were mailed this week were calculated using the new rates the Council approved last September.  The water rates decreased five percent and the sewer rates increased twelve percent.  The large sewer rate increase is to cover the sewage handling cost increase that North Kansas City received from KCMO earlier in 2018.

MoDOT will host a public meeting to provide an update on the Buck O’Neil Bridge Environmental Study. The environmental study is required prior to rehabbing or replacing the existing bridge. The public meeting will be held on Thursday, February 7, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the MARC offices at 600 Broadway, KCMO. More information about the study and the meeting is available online at https://www.modot.org/buck-oneil-bridge-environmental-study?fbclid=IwAR2-A6lkfZOtVam7e3eZ_H5LUMqCMOC6Pr4kVK1iT5W4pO1E8nPEudndNjs.
