A Message to the NKC Community

A Message to the NKC Community
Posted on 06/25/2020
To the Citizens of North Kansas City:

The weeks since the tragic and senseless death of George Floyd have been difficult ones for our nation.  This shameful chapter has caused all of us to consider our role in the perpetuation of racism; to ask about use of force policies in place in our police agencies; and to reflect on how we generally as a society need to do better at understanding experiences that are different from our own.

North Kansas City is a proudly diverse community, as exemplified by the wonderful mural just completed on the wall of the McCrummen Immigration Law Group building.  Literally scores of languages are spoken by students at North Kansas City High School.  This is wonderful, but we know we can do a better job of talking to each other and learning about the experiences that members of our minority communities have had in our community.  It would behoove all of us to get out of our bubbles and talk with people we do not always interact with.

I am immensely proud of our police department.  It is clear, looking at the results of the most recent resident survey conducted, that our residents are too.  But it is important that we have an ongoing conversation between our community and our police department about their experiences with each other, and about what we do, and should do, to keep the community safe while recognizing the humanity and inherent worth of every individual.  To that end, our police department has communicated about our use of force policies.

The police department is also working on organizing a community forum in the coming weeks to allow for a dialogue between the community and our police on these issues and any others of concern.  We are planning to conduct this forum on Tuesday, July 14th, at Macken Park.  Stay tuned for further details.

In the meantime, let us all pledge to fight systemic and individual racism; to celebrate our diversity; to support the right to peacefully protest; and to respect the humanity and dignity of every individual.

Sincerely,

Eric Berlin
