Old Trash and Recycling Services

North Kansas City provides trash collection to all non-commercial properties through WCA (aka: Town and Country Disposal). Please contact Public Works at 816-274-6004 to setup service and to receive your wheeled trash container. If you have any complaints, issues or need to report a missed pickup, please contact Public Works.

When is trash pickup?
Twice weekly. If you live east of Iron Street, your trash days are Monday and Thursday. Those who live west of Howell Street, or in the River Forest/Seminole area have trash collected Tuesday and Friday. WCA recognizes holidays: please refer to the Home Page for holiday schedule changes. Trash and recycling services will be delayed until the day following these holidays, with the schedule completed on Saturday.

Trash and recycling containers cannot be placed curbside prior to 6:00 PM the day before your trash pickup day, and must be removed by 7:00 am the day following pickup. Trash and recycling containers are required to be stored inside, or in your side or rear yard next to your house. Storing trash or recycling containers in your front yard is a Municipal Code violation and violators are subject to being fined.

Curbside Recycling
Curbside recycling days are on your first trash collection day of the week in your area. Recycling bins are to be placed curbside (or in alleys) by 7:00 am. Recycling bins are available from Public Works at 816-274-6004.

Items accepted for recycling are: newspapers; aluminum cans; plastic milk jugs, and beverage bottles; plastic containers with a number 1 -7 inside a triangle on the bottom; and corrugated cardboard boxes (should be broken down and flattened out). Glass bottles, jars, and containers are not accepted, but can be taken to the Ripple Glass recycling drop-off site located at the southwest corner of the YMCA parking lot.

Yard Waste

Yard waste collection is every Wednesday from March 1st through December 31st. Yard waste, such as leaves and grass clippings, must be placed in biodegradable paper bags. Bags are available at City Hall at the discounted price of 10 bags for $2.00. Yard waste is collected and composted, so plastic bags and other non-compostable materials are not accepted. Small tree branches and limbs are accepted, but must be bundled with rope or twine and cannot exceed 4 feet in length. Containers, other than biodegradable paper bags for yard waste, are not allowed and will not be hauled away by the trash hauler.

Bulky Waste

Bulky waste, which includes items such as kitchen appliances, furniture, mattresses, and other large items, is collected on the first Wednesday of the month. Please note that it is required for all 'refrigerated appliances' to have the refrigerant removed before it will be accepted for pickup. In such cases, the owner will need a professional (such as an appliance repair shop), to remove the refrigerant prior to disposal.  Tires, substantial amounts of debris, major remodeling or clean-up projects, including re-roofing and sheet rock replacement are not accepted, but residents can call WCA (aka: Town and Country Disposal) at (816) 380-5595 to arrange for dumpster service at a reasonable cost.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

Household hazardous waste includes household cleaners, lawn and garden products, automobile fluids, insecticides, paints and paint-related products, and other common products. Household hazardous waste containers usually have words such as DANGER, WARNING, or CAUTION on their labels. These hazardous products are not allowed in landfills because they are corrosive, explosive, reactive, flammable, or toxic, and may leach into underground water channels and pollute streams and rivers.

To properly dispose of HHW, residents may drop off products at no charge at Kansas City, Missouri’s conveniently located collection site, located just south of the Chouteau Bridge at 4707 Duramus. The hours of operation are: Thursdays and Fridays, 9:00 am – 6:00 pm, and Saturdays, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.
