The Community Development Department is responsible for scheduling and performing all inspections except for fire inspections which are handled by the Fire Department. Below are general descriptions of the different inspections you may need. There are a variety of inspections that will occur during your construction project. The inspections may include building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing depending on the scope of your project. Certificate of Occupancy (CO)
The CO is required for all business and new house construction. This purpose of this inspection is to ensure the building is safe for occupancy, to ensure the building is sufficient for the proposed use, and to ensure the proposed use is allowed in the specific zoning district. Fire inspections are performed annually by the Fire Department for every business. Call the Fire Department at 816-274-6025 if you have any questions.
Rental inspections are required for every rental unit and are performed after a tenant has vacated. The North Kansas City Municipal Code requires Rental Dwelling Inspections. The inspections are performed in order to safeguard public health, safety and welfare of the tenants and their families and to preserve and enhance property values and quality of life.
