Summary of Duties

Performs general police work in protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and investigation of crimes. Maintains presence within the community and works cooperatively with residents and business owners to communicate public safety issues and reduce crime.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Patrols city streets, roads and public places, either on foot, bicycle, all-terrain vehicle, or automobile enforcing laws, preventing law violations, observing and inspecting persons and property for potential illegal or hazardous activity or conditions, and responding to calls for service, situations, or requests from persons requiring assistance;
  • Conducts investigations of alleged or suspected criminal activity in response to calls for service received or information developed in the course of activities and makes initial determinations of investigative actions;
  • Interviews complainants, witnesses, suspects, and others who may have knowledge of a crime in order to obtain facts and information;
  • Observes and inspects crime scenes to evaluate the crime and collect physical evidence;
  • Searches persons, vehicles, and properties to locate and collect evidence of crimes;
  • Marks, packages, and preserves evidence collected;
  • Prepares daily reports, incident reports, subpoenas, and/or other related documents;
  • Apprehends criminal offenders within the guidelines of probable cause and constitutional requirements;
  • Confers with prosecutors and explains circumstances of crimes, evidence, facts, and conclusions in order to obtain needed warrants;
  • Appears in court to give evidence and testimony as to the facts surrounding cases being tried;
  • Acts as a liaison to other local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to provide or seek assistance with multi-jurisdictional cases;
  • May act as a formal instructor on proper police procedures in order to ensure fellow officers maintain certifications, and/or informally provide on-the-job training to less experienced officers;
  • With specialized training, may perform additional duties or participate on special teams and task forces, including K-9 handling, Special Incident Team, Hostage Negotiation Team, Metro Squad, Clay County Investigative Squad, NKCPD Major Case Squad, NKCPD Crash Team, etc.;
  • Assists with special projects and performs other similar duties as assigned.


Essential Duties Specific to the Commercial Vehicle Inspection Assignment:

  • Conducts regular inspections of commercial vehicles traveling through the City, checking for safety violations, adherence to weight restrictions, and updated log books for appropriate work and rest periods. Provides feedback to drivers, issues citations, and/or places drivers out of service.


    Essential Duties Specific to the Community Policing Officer Assignment:


    Essential Duties Specific to the Detective Assignment:

  • Processes crime scenes, including collecting and preserving physical evidence, photographing scenes, and transporting evidence to regional crime lab for analysis;
  • Maintains a case load appropriately, keeping Division Commander apprized of progress made on cases;
  • Routinely analyzes criminal trends.
  • Develops relationships and acts as a resource to residents, business owners, and property managers within the assigned community to provide crime prevention support;
  • Develops and conducts training seminars to various community groups on crime prevention and personal safety;
  • Performs home and business security inspections and provides owners with recommendations for a more secure premises;
  • Responds to and addresses landlord/tenant issues, citing City regulations and ordinances and providing resources within the City to resolve conflicts;
  • Develops partnership and working relationships with other City departments.


Essential Duties Specific to the School Resource Officer Assignment:

  • Designs, prepares, and presents classroom presentations to accent teachers’ basic curriculum and inform students of resources available to them through the School Resource Officer Program;
  • Develops and presents programs to community-civic groups to promote and inform the public regarding the School Resource Officer Program;
  • Cooperates with County juvenile officers to ensure offenders meet requirements as mandated;
  • Provides various resources to students, parents, faculty and administrators to assist in the resolution of current or potentially unlawful behaviors.


    Essential duties specific to the Traffic assignment:

  • Directs traffic, enforces traffic regulations, issues citations to offenders and investigates traffic collisions, private property, non-injury, injury, leave-the-scene, and fatality crashes;
  • Collects and maintains traffic crash statistics for Police Department quarterly reports and state reporting purposes;
  • Administers traffic-related grants.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent;
  • Special assignments require two years of police experience;
  • Must be certified as a police officer by the State of Missouri Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission;
  • Must possess a valid Missouri Driver’s License;
  • Must pass annual physical exam as prescribed by City policy.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies

  • Proficiency in grammar, spelling, and punctuation;
  • Knowledge of applicable State laws and departmental orders, rules, regulations, and policies;
  • Knowledge of lifesaving and first aid methods and techniques;
  • Knowledge of criminal justice procedures;
  • Knowledge of self-defense techniques;
    • Knowledge of the City geography;
    • Skill in interviewing and interrogating suspects;
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships with the public, co-workers, and representatives of other agencies;
  • Ability to explain policies, processes, regulations, and applicable laws within area of expertise in layman’s terms;
  • Ability to provide professional service and interact effectively with individuals who may be confused, upset, or irate;
  • Ability to maintain composure and make decisions of a serious nature;
  • Ability to perform duties under varying degrees of physical and mental stress;
  • Ability to utilize hand-to-hand self-defense tactics to control violent, combative individuals;
  • Ability to qualify at firing range with all department issued firearms.
  • Ability to accurately take statements, and recover and document evidence at scene of incident;
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries;
  • Ability to consistently demonstrate sound ethics and judgment;
  • Ability to think analytically and apply sound judgment, solve problems, make effective decisions, and act with integrity;
  • Ability to use City resources effectively and efficiently.

  • Knowledge of state and federal commercial vehicle regulations and codes.

  • Ability to interrogate suspects and arrested persons to obtain confessions;
  • Ability to interview witnesses to verify criminal complaints;
  • Skilled in reviewing and analyzing criminal cases to determine appropriate course of investigation.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies Specific to the School Resource Officer assignment:

  • Knowledge of Community Oriented Policing Philosophy;
  • Ability to make formal public presentations.
  • Knowledge of basic crime prevention techniques;

  • Ability to safely operate a bicycle to patrol City neighborhoods.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Other Requirements

  • May be required to climb or reach, reach with hands and arms, sit, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk or hear, smell, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel;
  • May be required to lift/move over 50 pounds;
  • Position frequently works in an outdoor environment with exposure to weather-related heat and cold, rain, wind, and related elements;
  • May be exposed to working in extreme heat and cold (not weather related), close quarters, high and precarious places, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, vibration, fumes or airborne particles, infectious diseases, or criminal suspects;
  • Occasional intense physical contact while affecting arrests;
  • May require irregular hours and be required to serve in an “on-call” capacity.
