Friday Greetings,

According to current weather reports, snow is not in the forecast for at least a week.  This break gives our Municipal Services crews a well-earned reprieve from snow removal operations. They have responded to 31 snow and/or ice events starting with the November 25 blizzard. Interestingly, most of the pavement pretreatment and snow removal has been on weekends this year.  So far this year, five pallets of ice melt, 450 tons of salt, and 6,000 gallons of liquid salt brine have been used. Overtime pay has been minimized due to adjustments in schedules, and many employees have chosen to use flex time instead of overtime. The rain forecasted this weekend should melt the remaining snow and wash the salt off the streets.

The Yard Waste Program will begin on March 6 and continues every Wednesday through December. Yard waste (leaves and grass clippings) must be placed in biodegradable paper bags. Bags are available at City Hall at the discounted price of 10 bags for $2. Plastic bags and non-biodegradable materials are not accepted. Small tree branches are accepted; however, they must be bundled and cannot exceed 4 feet in length.

The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) is conducting a North Oak Corridor Transit Study focused on evaluating current transit service in the Northland and identifying options for service modifications that can increase ridership and enhance mobility for surrounding communities. The study will also consider the feasibility of a MAX level transit investment in the Burlington/North Oak corridor that includes higher service levels and increased rider amenities, similar to the MAX routes in operation south of the river on Main, Troost, and Prospect.

KCATA will be hosting an open house on Tuesday, March 5 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the North Kansas City YMCA, 1999 Iron Street to share information, answer questions, and receive input on the plan.
