All businesses and contractors doing business in North Kansas City or operating from a location in North Kansas City must have a North Kansas City business license. The business type and location determines which type of license is required. If a business has more than one location in North Kansas City, each location needs a license. Please read below to determine which license you need. All completed forms should be emailed to licensing@nkc.org.

Business Personal Property Taxes
The process of obtaining a North Kansas City business license begins with registering with the Clay County Assessor for business personal property taxes. All real estate and business personal property taxes must be current before a license will be issued. The Clay County Assessor can be reached at (816) 407-3500. Licenses
There are 4 types of business licenses: Inside Contractor, Outside Contractor, Class 2 (Fixed Fees) and Class 3 (Gross Receipts). Please read below to determine what type of license you need and which form to use. Completed forms can be returned to licensing@nkc.org.
Contractors License

RENEWAL Contractor license application
All contractors must provide proof of liability insurance naming the City as the certificate holder. If the contractor is doing business for the City then the City must be listed as additional insured. Contractors that are also required to provide proof of workers’ compensation insurance include:
• Asphalt contractors
• Wrecking contractors
• Mobile washing facilities using chemicals and solvents
• Foundational, structural, and building exterior contractors
• Roofing contractors
• Specialty trade contractors such as sandblasting
• Spray washing conducted outside and other services to buildings and/or dwellings
• Landscaping contractors such as tree surgeons and trimmers
• Exterminating contractors
*Please Note: A current certificate of insurance showing the "City of North Kansas City" as a certificate holder must be on file prior to issuance of the business license. If the contractor is exempt from workers’ compensation, an Affidavit of Exemption for Workers’ Compensation Insurance form is required. The exemption form must be notarized before submission to NKC.
Class 2 and Class 3 Licenses
If your business is listed in the Class 2 business table below, you must apply for a Class 2 license using the associated form. The fees for Class 2 licenses are listed on the application. All other businesses must use the Class 3 application found below.

Class 3 Businesses (all other business types):
All other businesses require a Class 3 license. Fees for Class 3 licenses are calculated based on gross receipts, which is your total revenue before expenses. All Class 3 businesses must meet additional “No Tax Due” requirements. Businesses must demonstrate that they are compliant with State sales and withholding tax laws. It is a quick, free service through the Missouri Department of Revenue. Payments
You can either mail a check with your completed application or submit the application without payment. If you submit an application without payment, we will email an invoice once we process your license application.
Missouri House Bill 1549
The Illegal Aliens and Immigration Status Verification Act provides that if a business knowingly employs an illegal alien, it will result in the suspension of the company’s applicable local licenses, permits or exemptions.
